Poudre Learning Center

The Poudre Learning Center (PLC) strives to awaken a sense of wonder and inspire environmental stewardship and citizenship through education of students, families and local residents along the Colorado Northern Front Range. The PLC is the only environmental education center in all of Weld County, Colorado. Our local districts have a high percentage of students living in poverty who do not have many opportunities to connect with open space and an environmental center. Many of these populations are underrepresented in STEM careers. The PLC provides the only natural open space area with highly qualified, trained and seasoned environmental science educators to support the visitors’ experience to the site. Our outreach numbers have more than tripled since 2004. Last year, our outreach connected over 30,000 educators, children and families to their environment. District records of student achievement indicate that the schools that made repeated use of the Poudre Learning Center have higher levels of student achievement than those which did not. PLC offers interdisciplinary, inquiry-based education programs aimed at reinforcing and applying essential concepts presented in local school curricula while modeling a data-driven decision-making process. The center builds a sense of place for partner school district students, area residents and families through the construction of a water-based classroom laboratory where the Cache la Poudre’s past and present can be used to blend economics, history, culture, science, bluff geology and aesthetics into an enhanced environmental educational experience for all. Native ecosystems for study include riparian, lacustrine (lake), wetland, and prairie areas. Family and student outreach projects provide opportunities for our students that they would not otherwise receive. It’s vitally important for every child to have an opportunity to connect with place-based nature in a safe, supportive, educational atmosphere.
