Working in Neighborhoods VISTA

Since 1978, Working In Neighborhoods’ mission has been “to empower people to make informed choices for themselves and their neighborhoods through community building, home ownership, and economic learning.” WIN has a strong reputation for developing resident leadership and supporting community-organizing efforts that increase transparency, inclusiveness and social equity in decision-making. South Cumminsville/Millvale is located in the lower Mill Creek Valley in the City of Cincinnati, and is part of a heavily industrialized zone packed with transportation and water management infrastructure, industrial land, and older residential housing. The neighborhood is 90 percent African American with a median household income of less than $15,000 per year, and has been designated as a “food desert” by the Cincinnati Health Department. In spite of these challenges, residents are actively engaged in the Community Council and neighborhood planning and revitalization efforts, and more than 50 percent of the neighborhood’s occupied residential units are owner-occupied. With support from WIN, South Cumminsville residents are working to make their community “greener” and more walkable, initiating efforts to improve safety and reduce unemployment, expand access to fresh food and otherwise improve the health and quality of life in the neighborhood.
