Supports to Encourage Low-Income Families (SELF)

SELF (Supports to Encourage Low-income Families) is a Community Action Agency and private 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving Butler County, OH whose mission is to enhance the quality of life for low-income residents by impacting the causes of poverty and empowering individuals to achieve, sustain, and advocate self-sufficiency. SELF’s Housing and Construction programs work together to help lift people out of poverty through free home repairs, construction training, and a social enterprise program which renovates homes, provides affordable housing, and reinvests proceeds back into the organization. SELF’s other programs include financial literacy courses, employment workshops, utility assistance, emergency assistance, and workshops that assist with life skills. SELF is seeking an AmeriCorps VISTA who can assist the organization’s housing programs which have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. SELF’s annual volunteer-drive home repair blitz weeks were cancelled in 2020 and 2021, and it’s time to prepare for 2022 and 2023 projects. SELF is seeking a VISTA with a positive attitude who can assist with rebuilding its volunteer base after losing 1/3 our normal volunteers amid the pandemic. The VISTA will also research new opportunities to market its Housing and Construction programs to potential volunteers and potential clients, build two desperately needed databases, and help with revamping its construction training program. The VISTA will work with SELF’s Housing staff and administrative staff as needed to expand program capacity, market and promote programs, and assist with volunteer recruitment and retention.
