Summer Reads - Morris, MN

Morris Area Community Education’s Summer Sizzle Program is entering its second summer, and looking forward to another awesome session. Summer Sizzle takes place at the Morris Area Elementary School and the Regional Fitness Center. Summer Reads VISTAs provide high-quality literacy tutoring to low income children in grades K-3 in schools, libraries, and community organizations across the state. The mornings here are academically based, along with station and group work and enrichment opportunities. The afternoons are spent participating in recreational and creational activities either at the MAES, or at the RFC. Morris Area Community Education also offers recreation and enrichment classes throughout the summer that many of our Summer Sizzle students participate in. We provide a positive experience to those that love reading, as well as those that may have negative feelings towards literacy. Morris Area Community Education is working to close our achievement gap for our K-6 grade students by offering this safe and fun learning environment that runs almost all summer long for families. *[2] positions available. Positions are part of the MN Literacy Council Summer Reads cohort. www.mnliteracy.org/americorps-vista

Member Duties : VISTAs will be responsible for working with students grades K-3 on literacy and reading related skills through a variety of different mediums – books, arts and crafts, flashcards, reading, etc. They will be expected to provide instruction and enrichment activities to students in both large and small group settings. Each day will be something new, as Summer Sizzle is a drop in program; however, many of our students are on a consistent schedule. In this fast paced, creative environment, VISTAs will have many opportunities to work alongside other staff members, but also lead and create their own activities. With support from the VISTAs, we can track student progress that we can use now, and in the future. The VISTA will use literacy interventions and conduct assessments to ensure students are on track to read at grade level. We also expect VISTAs to assist our other staff members with group activities, and to incorporate reading and literacy components when able.
