Summer Reads - Morris, MN (LitMN)

Morris Area Community Education’s Summer Sizzle Program is looking forward to another awesome season. Summer Reads Mentors provide high-quality literacy tutoring to low income children in grades K-5 in schools, libraries and community organizations. The mornings here are academically based, along with station and group work, and enrichment opportunities. The afternoons are spent participating in recreational and creational activities. Morris Area Community Education is working to close our opportunity gap for our K-6 grade students by offering this safe and fun learning environment that runs almost all summer long for families. *Members serve full-time, approximately 40 hours per week, primarily Mon - Fri. Literacy Minnesota provides member trainings on most Fridays. Term of service is June 13–August 7. Orientation takes place virtually June 13-17. Multiple positions available. Literacy Minnesota fosters an organizational culture that is welcoming and inclusive to all. Applications reviewed on a rolling basis. Member Duties : Mentors work with students on literacy skills through books, arts and crafts, flashcards, etc. They provide instruction and enrichment activities to students in large and small groups. Each day is new, as Summer Sizzle is a drop in program (many students are on consistent schedules). In this fast paced, creative environment, Mentors work alongside other staff members and lead or create their own activities. We provide a positive experience to lovers of reading and those that may have negative feelings towards it. With support from Mentors, we track student progress. Mentors use literacy interventions and conduct assessments to ensure students are on track to read at grade level. Mentors assist other staff members with group activities, incorporating reading and literacy components. *Positions are part of Literacy Minnesota's Summer Reads program, which trains/places about 60 AmeriCorps VISTA members as literacy mentors. About half of members serve outside the Twin Cities metro.
