University of Georgia VISTA Network: Campus Kitchen

The Campus Kitchen at UGA is the student-powered hunger relief program of the UGA Office of Service-Learning. Each week, students transform unused food from grocery stores and farmers markets into meals and groceries that are delivered to older adults and service agencies in Athens, Georgia. The Campus Kitchen at UGA goes beyond meals by using food as a tool to combat senior isolation, foster community connections, and engage UGA students and faculty in developing sustainable solutions to food waste and hunger. Student leaders develop community partnerships, recover food, plan menus, run cooking shifts, deliver and redistribute food, and garden. Today, the Campus Kitchen at UGA serves 1,100 meals each month to older adults, their families, and aging service providers. Students lead community dinners, teach and manage a senior community garden, participate in an intergenerational Lunch Buddy program. For more information, visit our website at ck.uga.edu. The Campus Kitchen at UGA is an affiliate of the Campus Kitchens Project, and was the first Campus Kitchen to open in Georgia in 2012. The Campus Kitchen at UGA remains centrally focused on combating senior hunger, and is a member of the Athens Senior Hunger Coalition.
