GIVE. GROW. SERVE. TOGETHER. The COMCorps program at Ohio University will have 24 AmeriCorps members who will make sustainable changes in Southeast Appalachian Ohio to address known health needs by partnering with schools, government and non-profit agencies, as well as local universities in a two county area including Athens and Washington Counties. COMCorps supports programs that provide access to evidence-based nutrition education, healthy fresh food, physical activity, and preventative and primary health care services for children and their families. COMCorps' principle is to fill needed health behavior gaps by placing individuals with relevant backgrounds and training in the community to focus on lifestyle factors that are related to poor health outcomes. The program focuses on obesity prevention via activities such as the Live Healthy Kids nutrition education curriculum, gardening education and outreach, increasing healthy food access and consumption, and providing health screenings to area schools. COMCorps engages students, families, and community members to play an active role in their health and well-being. COMCorps members GIVE their passion, talents, and knowledge; GROW through professional development, leadership, and cultural experiences; SERVE a 6 month 900 hour term for approximately 34-37 hours per week to impact community change; TOGETHER with 24 members serving in 17 host sites including schools, nonprofits, and government agencies in Southeast Ohio to create a network of relationships to get things done. #joincomcorps
