2015 VolunteerIowa: ISU Veterans Center Outreach Coordinator

The Iowa State University (ISU) Veterans Center’s mission is to strengthen the lives of Veterans, military personnel, family members, and our community. We provide a space for students and visitors to go for Veteran-related questions and to connect with others around a shared common experience. We facilitate these connections through providing a lounge space and programs and activities for students, faculty, staff, and community members to meet and connect. These events include the ISU Community Supper and the Gold Star Hall Ceremony (both which take place during Veterans Day week), Faculty, Staff and Student Veterans Meet & Greets, and Homeless Veterans Stand Down. The goal of the ISU Veterans Center VISTA project will be to better connect Veterans, military personnel, and their families in the Iowa State University, Ames, Story County, and Iowa communities to resources and opportunities which will assist them financially, socially, and academically. The VISTA would work within the Veterans Center to continue building systems of support for military affiliated individuals. This includes supporting and developing community events such as the Homeless Stand Down, but also develop systems to better connect resources across our state. The ISU Veterans Center AmeriCorps VISTA will serve as a part of the Volunteer Iowa Veterans and Youth AmeriCorps VISTA Program. The Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service (Volunteer Iowa) is a state agency whose mission is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering. AmeriCorps VISTA members with our program will have the benefit of a statewide support network of Volunteer Iowa staff, Commissioners, National Service Programs, and fellow AmeriCorps VISTA members. Members will receive ongoing training, support, networking, and professional development opportunities.
