MN Health Corps 15-16: Century College Health Resources

The mission statement of Century College reflects the central purpose of the institution to “Inspire, prepare and empower students to succeed in a changing world.” Our goal is to help students succeed in their coursework and earn their chosen higher education credential. However, data demonstrates that our growing population of underserved students are facing significant health and wellness barriers to achieving these accomplishments. One indicator of the challenges students face is the number who are eligible to receive federal Pell grants. This is a representative indicator for living in poverty. Between 2009 and 2013 Century has seen the number of students who are eligible for a Pell grant rise from 3,986 to 7,091. An increase of almost 80 percent. By this measure, almost 50% of students at Century are impoverished. With a high incidence of poverty, many students are also not accessing healthcare services, not acquiring healthcare insurance, and often not successfully addressing their needs for health and wellness. At the same time, the College does not have the expertise or resources to address the vast needs that underserved students have in these areas, therefore building partnerships in health serving organizations is critical to Century’s realization of our mission. The VISTA will develop and implement four new health related community partnerships; assist with the creation and establishment of a Resource and Referral Center aimed at connecting students with community health care services and organizations, basic needs and overall health and wellness information; and identify and create a marketing campaign to help students learn about campus community partnerships and the Resource and Referral Center. Century College is very committed to helping students overcome these challenges and considers hosting a VISTA a tremendous opportunity to make progress towards our goal of helping all students succeed.
