SOTS - First Nations Oweesta: Native Nonprofit Development
Spirit of the Sun has partnered with First Nations Oweesta Corporation to enable VISTA capacity building projects. Oweesta supports economic growth in Native American communities through the creation, development, and capitalization of Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs). Native CDFIs provide Native American communities directly with the tools and capital support required for real and sustainable job creation, small business development, commercial real estate development, and affordable housing/home ownership, as well as basic banking services. Oweesta also offers financial literacy training in Native American communities that historically have been targeted by predatory lending practices. Oweesta believes that when provided with the appropriate resources, Native people possess the capacity and ingenuity to ensure the sustainable, economic, spiritual and cultural well-being of their communities.
