MN Health Corps 15-16: SMSU & Marshall YMCA
 
 
 
This collaborative partnership between SMSU and the Y will work with community health initiatives to focus on the needs of low income residents in our region. VISTA position will share time between SMSU and the Y, spending time at both organizations each week with an end goal of connecting the community through programs and services that promote healthy, active lifestyles. Program will work with existing structure at SMSU via Exercise Science student projects and professional practicum which will be offered at no cost to the community and at the Y via the national YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program, community programming and SMSU campus programming. The goal is to also develop new, sustainable programming for education in exercise, healthy active lifestyles for families, and healthy food choices through both organizations for the larger community and region. Additional program goals are to integrate health promotion programs with the My Marshall Initiative focusing on increased physical activity and increased healthy eating habits; develop a system for hosting 5K Run/Walk/Bike events for the community; to nurture healthy active lifestyle education for 7th graders in the public school system; create training manuals for participation in fitness testing and exercise prescription; engage Hispanic, Somali and other communities; and measure impact for all programs and services administered throughout VISTA’s term of service.

Member Duties : Candidate will serve at both SMSU and YMCA each week. The overall goal of this position is to put systems in place so that a partnership between these organizations and other community entities can be sustained for years to come. VISTA will be responsible for identifying community needs, program planning, and program analysis in order to foster the continued programming needs of the community. Member will work on programs that serve multiple age groups. VISTA’s service will benefit youth and families through YMCA programming; junior high students through implementation of healthy lifestyle education; adults through health education programming in conjunction with the Exercise Science students at SMSU; young adults, adults, and potentially older adults through the YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program; and others as community needs dictate. **Interviews will occur on a rolling basis.
