MN Health Corps 15-16: Youth Violence Intervention

The VISTA will support the Minneapolis Health Department’s (MHD) youth violence prevention efforts. MHD is the public health department for the City of Minneapolis. Our mission is to improve the quality of life for all people in the city by protecting the environment, preventing disease and injury, promoting healthy behaviors, and creating a city that is a healthy place to live, work, and play. In 2008 the City initiated a public health response to the issue of youth violence organized within MHD. A public health framework incorporating primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention allows MHD to address youth violence holistically, looking at individual supports and interventions and systems-level infrastructure and process improvements. The primary project area for the VISTA is the Minneapolis Youth Violence Intervention Program (MYVIP). Through MYVIP, youth who present to a hospital with a violent assault injury will meet with a trained professional who can provide a needs assessment and follow-up services around trauma, crisis support, and mental health counseling. The VISTA will provide important capacity for continued development and successful implementation of the program. The VISTA will also play an important role in coordinating, developing, and implementing training around youth violence prevention for youth serving professionals. The VISTA will also contribute to MHD and University of Minnesota’s primary prevention efforts by supporting implementation of social-emotional learning (SEL) in schools and developing opportunities for MHD to support SEL broadly as a tool for health promotion and the prevention of health-risk behaviors. Finally, The VISTA will play a critical role in MHD’s plans to implement and evaluate a capacity building program for grassroots community based providers around increasing organizational capacity, training on best practices for youth violence prevention and service delivery, and training on cultural specificity.
