MN Health Corps 15-16: Rochester Students’ Health Services

Rochester Students’ Health Services (RSHS) is an all-volunteer organization offering free health care to Rochester Alternative Learning Center (ALC) students and their children. The mission of RALC is to support viable educational options for students who are experiencing difficulty in any educational system and are at risk of educational failure. Providing healthcare services at the school increases access to healthcare and decreases school absenteeism. The aims of the clinic are to improve the overall health of the ALC students and their children by addressing acute health conditions, facilitating care of chronic conditions, improving health literacy, fostering students engagement in protective, health-enhancing behaviors and avoidance of risky behaviors, empowering students to become invested in their health, and improving graduation rates by reducing the number of school days lost due to health concerns. Integration of the clinic services with other health related activities into a coordinated school health program (CSHP) would increase the effectiveness of all components and enhance the impact on the student health. An array of health related activities already exist at the ALC offered by a variety of persons and organizations including teachers, mental health and school counselors, social workers, public health nurses, school nurses and clinic staff, each bringing specialized expertise. In addition many service learning projects are based at the ALC. A major goal is the development of a systematic, building-wide approach to health education, services, and activities, targeted to the needs of this unique population of students.
