MN Health Corps 15-16: Health Commons & Campus Kitchen

This VISTA position will support two initiatives at Augsburg College that focus on community-serving health and food programs: Campus Kitchen and the Health Commons. The Campus Kitchen at Augsburg College works to make healthy food accessible to all in and around the Cedar Riverside Neighborhood to provide for basic needs, service learning, leadership development, and genuine engagement between the college and the community. We have four components that work to make learning happen though connections with food and the community: food to share, food to grow, food to buy, and food to know. Learn more at: http://www.augsburg.edu/campuskitchen/ The Health Commons are health focused drop-in centers in a local context. The Augsburg Central Health Commons has served downtown Minneapolis, where the majority of participants are homeless or marginally housed, for 22 years. Simple hygiene items, diapers and socks are provided free of charge, and nurses and nurse practitioners are available for health questions, blood pressure checks, foot care and connections to resources. The focus is being a place that is welcoming to all visitors and building relationships with all people. It is our belief that without a community of people who care, health is negatively impacted. The Health Commons in Cedar-Riverside was founded 3 years ago. It operates on the same principles as the Augsburg Central Health Commons, but the participant population in much different. Most visitors are East African immigrants interested in educational groups such as exercise, nutrition and parenting classes. On Fridays, we provide mobile care in various community settings (e.g., public housing or mosques) and provide one-on-one health consultation, massage and Healing Touch. This Health Commons represents a partnership with Augsburg College, University of Minnesota Medical Center and the East Africa Health Project.
