Indy Hunger Network Nutrition Program 2016

The Indy Hunger Network (IHN) is a coalition of anti-hunger organizations in Indianapolis. Its mission is to create a sustainable system that ensures anyone who is hungry can access the nutritious food they need. IHN works to: - Foster collaboration and build on the capabilities of the major food-providing community organizations - Identify opportunities to make the food system work better for hungry people - Establish projects to make improvements - Monitor health of overall food system - Create awareness of hunger and how to address it VISTA members placed at IHN work directly with the Board President and will develop partnerships with non-profit and government entities to expand access to healthy food. Members are integral to the entire project development process, working to research, develop, plan, implement and evaluate nutrition assistance. VISTA members will gain extensive valuable experience in community development and public health, working with a variety of partners.

Member Duties : The VISTA will work on a variety of projects simultaneously. Projects include 1) working with community partners to evaluate a senior hunger pilot program and determine the need to replicate it within other neighborhoods. 2) Work with a team of marketing professionals to develop a sustainable approach to reaching mothers who could benefit from the Women, Infants, and Children program. 3) Evaluate IHN’s awareness campaign for the summer meal program; evaluate inaugural mini-grant program; lead the planning for 2016 summer efforts. 4) Conduct a pilot program to test IHN’s macro system efforts at the local level. Contribute to the assessment of each project for overall improvement of the food assistance system. While all projects provide opportunity to work collaboratively with food assistance professionals, a great amount of time is spent working independently. The VISTA must be self-motivated, disciplined, exhibit strong communication skills and be a creative thinker.
