MN Health Corps 15-16: UofM UROC Trauma Recovery

As part of its mission to discover breakthrough solutions that improve the quality of life in urban communities while transforming the way universities and communities work together, the University of Minnesota’s Urban Research and Outreach-Engagement Center (UROC), located at the historic intersection of Plymouth and Penn Avenues in North Minneapolis, launched the Trauma Recovery Project (TRP) in the spring of 2013. The goal of the TRP is to build on the critical wisdom, knowledge and experiences of communities to develop solutions to challenging issues of mental health in an urban context and, pairing that wisdom with university research-based evidence, develop powerful new ways of confronting the vexing issues related to trauma, mental health and historical trauma. UROC is hosting work sessions made up of families, University researchers, community stakeholders, mental health practitioners and representatives from the faith community and Minneapolis Public Schools to identify trauma-related issues of importance to the North Minneapolis community. The multi-year, community-based research project aims to create a roadmap for recovery from trauma through a comprehensive strategy for positive change in the lives of families and the community as a whole. At heart, this work is about eliminating health disparities by ethnicities and class in our urban core.
