2015 VolunteerIowa: New Opp. STEM Program Coordinator

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) skills are vital for Iowa youth to develop in order to prepare them for future college and career readiness. New Opportunities, with the help of an AmeriCorps VISTA service member, will expand our mentoring opportunities in Sac County to include engagement with STEM professionals. Mentoring is especially important in rural Iowa where our youth have been identified as at higher risk for engaging in underage and binge drinking. The New Opportunities STEM VISTA Project will create mentoring relationships that support Sac County youth as they develop healthy lifetime habits as well as skills for college and careers. The VISTA Project will engage community STEM professionals in an “expert committee” to advise New Opportunities on approaches to outreach, education, and community support. The VISTA member will have the opportunity to develop sustainable programming materials as well as data collection methods to tell the story of STEM mentoring in Sac County to potential funders. The New Opportunities STEM Program Coordinator AmeriCorps VISTA will serve as a part of the Volunteer Iowa Students and Veterans AmeriCorps VISTA Program. The Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service (Volunteer Iowa) is a state agency whose mission is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering. Through our statewide Volunteer Iowa Students AmeriCorps VISTA Program we will seek to create a climate where economically disadvantaged students are provided the tools needed for academic success. AmeriCorps VISTA members with our program will have the benefit of a statewide support network of Volunteer Iowa staff, Commissioners, National Service Programs, and fellow AmeriCorps VISTA members. Members will receive ongoing training, support, networking, and professional development opportunities.
