Prairie State Legal Services Community Impact Project

Prairie State Legal Services is a civil legal aid program serving low income persons in 36 counties in northern and central Illinois from 11 service offices. Prairie State has provided free legal aid services for more than 40 years. The organization has a staff of more than 125 attorneys, paralegals, intake specialists, support and administrators. Our services focus on helping low income persons to overcome legal problems that are a barrier to meeting their basic human needs such as domestic violence, evictions, mortgage foreclosures, denials of needs based public benefits, utility shut-offs and related issues. Prairie State offers its services through our local offices, telephone helplines, court-house based clinics, community-based clinics and outreach sites. Prairie State is the only legal aid program in the majority of its service area and because of this, PSLS works hard to expand services via hundreds of volunteer attorneys and through legal education and outreach efforts to community organizations and agencies serving the client populations. We also seek to help community members to understand their legal rights and responsibilities and to resolve some legal problems on their own. Prairie State has operated VISTA projects for several years and we are recruiting persons to continue these efforts. Past VISTAs have established courthouse based help desks where volunteers provide struggling homeowners facing foreclosure with information about the foreclosure process and their options, created successful public benefits outreach efforts, and created volunteer lawyer projects for targeted services. VISTAs bring their creativity, enthusiasm, and skills to their work with Prairie State and the organization offers training, professional development, a collaborative working environment, and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the community.
