VHCB AmeriCorps - Environmental Educator (NBNC)
The North Branch Nature Center is an environmental education center that aims to connect people of all ages to the natural world. NBNC aims to inspire and teach people about the wonders of nature through outdoor experiences, stewardship, citizen science projects, and lessons in natural history. Our Americorps members will help to demonstrate and share our mission by teaching, organizing community events, and helping with ongoing citizen science projects. Desired Qualifications: - Some teaching experience and strong public speaking skills. - High comfort level working outside with groups - General knowledge of New England natural history - Ability to work independently or as part of a team - Strong organizational skills and work ethic Service is to be performed primarily outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Service will require frequent hikes over uneven and steep terrain. Position begins September 11th, 2017 and ends August 10th, 2018. This position is Full Time: Requires 1,700 hours and serves approximately 40 hours per week for 11 months. Member will receive a living allowance of $17,850 (pre-tax), and an education award of $5,815 (pre-tax) upon successful completion of service. Member Duties : Essential Functions: • Co-teach elementary students through our Educating Children Outdoors program in local public schools and collaborate with teachers • Co-teach Forest Preschool programs at NBNC • Co-teach afterschool programs at NBNC • Plan and teach summer camp programs at NBNC for children ages 4-14 • Host and speak at public events representing NBNC and our mission • Conduct citizen projects at NBNC and around the state of Vermont
