Interfaith Action of Central TX-Communication & Development

iACT’s two main service programs are the Hands on Housing program which repairs the homes of elderly and disabled homeowners who cannot afford to do it themselves, and the Refugee Program which teaches English as a Second Language to newly arrived refugees from all over the world. The HoH program utilizes volunteer teams and professionals to work on homes mostly during two annual events. The refugee program is funded by the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement and is the only entity in Austin specializing in teaching English to refugees who speak up to 25 different languages. Part of the agency’s mission is to involve individuals of diverse faiths to work together through the two service programs. iACT’s dialogue program, the Red Bench: Interfaith Conversations that Matter, allows people of different faiths and points of view to learn about each other through organized dialogue monthly events. It takes place at different locations around Austin and has expanded recently into local universities and colleges. iACT also sponsors city wide events like the annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service or World Refugee Day that allow communities to participate in shared celebrations.
