Rio Grande Valley Literacy Center-Program Coordinator

The Rio Grande Valley Literacy Center offers professional quality English as a Second Language (ESL) and GED Preparation Classes for Adults seeking to improve their employability skills, and overall economic stability through education. We also offer Family Literacy Programs in select areas throughout the region in need of concentrated literacy programs and support services. From Intro to Conversational English, we offer six levels of ESL Classes. Our classes are curriculum based and incorporate research-based teaching strategies proven effective in English language acquisition. We also offer small group, instructor led, GED Preparation (classes in both English and Spanish). Classes are compliant with the new 2014 General Educational Development (GED) Exam. The 2014 GED, a computer based test which had not been updated since 2002 has made various changes in order to more closely align with high school equivalency. In 2014, RGVLC began offering Family Literacy Classes in the community of South Pharr. The South Pharr Family Literacy Initiative (SPFLI) promotes literacy and a greater appreciation for reading in families at risk for low literacy and illiteracy. The initiative utilizes a comprehensive, family-focused approach, providing parents and children in need of improving their literacy skills, with intensive, frequent, and long-term educational programs and support services. SPFLI makes sustainable changes in a family’s literacy by integrating 4 components: child education, adult education, parent education, and parent-child activities. In order to accomplish this, RGVLC has partnered with the Boys and Girls Club of Pharr, Su Casa de Esperanza, the Pharr Memorial Library, Teaching and Mentoring Communities, and the South Texas Literacy Coalition.
