Literacy San Antonio-SAReads Program Coordinator

SAReads is successfully coordinating partners and leveraging collaborative efforts to deliver cost-effective, research-based programs, including our one-on-one volunteer reading tutor program, our citywide book drive, and a centralized book bank serving nonprofits and area schools. Partner school district (Southwest ISD) provide access to their facilities and support from personnel (principals, teachers and reading specialists) while trained SAReads tutors from local universities, businesses and service organizations work with designated students in schools. Each student receives one-on-one tutoring at least once per week over the sixteen-week period, which coincides with the academic year. Students are given their own books to take home prior to winter break, spring break, and summer vacation to develop home libraries and practice reading. SAReads currently has 11 locations, providing quality literacy skill-building programs for San Antonio’s most at-risk student population, and demonstrating success in the reading improvements of those children. Students served by SAReads partner district (Southwest ISD) are assessed three times per year by their teachers utilizing the Texas Primary Reading Inventory (TPRI) SAReads receives data from the school districts for program assessment and student tracking purposes. Students may participate in the program from kindergarten through 3rd grade.
