AK State Library (Coffman Cove, Prince of Wales Island)
 
 
 
We are recruiting 1 VISTA for Coffman Cove (to join a team of 5 VISTAs in the Prince of Wales Island region). The Libraries Build Communities VISTA project will alleviate poverty by increasing employability & support aspiring small business ownership. Programming will focus on improving financial literacy, job readiness & digital literacy skills & entrepreneurship for the unemployed. The VISTA will continue to expand early literacy programming supporting the development of school readiness skills in pre-school aged children from low income families to improve their educational success. The VISTA volunteer will work collaboratively with local and state agencies, schools and non-profits: * To to develop workshops, online self-paced training opportunities and resources that focus on financial literacy, job readiness skills and entrepreneurship; * To create sustainable early literacy centers in each library and develop programs that promote early literacy, numeracy skill and school readiness; and * To improve library services and build capacity for the library by developing library trustee training, volunteer recruitment and management procedures and grant writing; **Benefits include: Monthly living allowance ($1,222), relocation costs ($0.34/mile up to $1000) and settling in allowance ($550) for relocating members, health benefits, child care assistance, training, and an Education Award ($5,775) or cash stipend.

Member Duties : We are seeking an adventurous VISTA to serve in Southeast Alaska, known for its beautiful scenery, wildlife viewing and kayaking opportunities. The VISTA will develop programming delivered from the Coffman Cove Community Library which will alleviate poverty by increasing employability & support aspiring small business ownership. Programming will focus on improving financial literacy, job readiness & digital literacy skills & entrepreneurship for the unemployed. The VISTA will continue to expand early literacy programming supporting the development of school readiness skills in pre-school aged children from low income families to improve their future educational success. The VISTA will build capacity for the library by writing grants, forming partnerships and developing library trustee training, volunteer recruitment and management procedures. **If selected for this VISTA role, your service year would begin in August 2016. (Exact date TBA)
