Tribal VISTA: AL- Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge

Southwest Conservation Corps (SCC) provides young women and men with structured, safe, and challenging service and educational opportunities through projects that promote personal growth, the development of social skills, and an ethic of natural resource stewardship. The Ancestral Lands (SCC-AL) program was created to serve Native American youth, working to provide the same opportunities that SCC offers through its other programs. It is the mission of the Southwest Conservation Corps to empower individuals to positively impact their lives, their communities, and the environment; and the Ancestral Lands’ vision is to have Native youth leading our Nations back to ecological and cultural well-being. The Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps has worked to engage Native American communities around the country to offer service-based conservation opportunities to Tribal youth and young adults.

Member Duties : The VISTA will work with local Native stakeholders within the area tribes, non-profit organizations, and local, state, and federal agencies to communicate the opportunities that an Ancestral Lands program can bring to the surrounding Native communities, as well as gauge the desires and needs of these communities. The VISTA will do this by planning and implementing at least one Youth PLS event at Valle de Oro NWR, hosting a project work hitch, and through listening sessions that engage the surrounding communities and give space for their voices to be heard. The VISTA will also work to create buy-in and support amongst these communities for an ALCC program and will develop a recruitment process for other positions that will support the program, including volunteers, future VISTA members and two, 6-month interns. This VISTA opportunity will include national training and conference opportunities as well as professional development through staff shadowing, partnerships, and engagement.
