DOI/VISTA: New River Gorge Camp Brookside

Friends of New River Gorge National River is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that supports the National Park Service’s management of all three national parks in southern West Virginia. These parks encompass over 72,000 acres and 53 miles of river, including the New River, Gauley River and Bluestone River. The New River is one of the oldest rivers in the world and is a leader in biodiversity with over 1,400 different plant species and 23 federally listed endangered animals. In May of 2016, the National Park Service opened the Camp Brookside Environmental Education Center. This center is located on a 32 acre island in the New River and provides a premier destination for research, citizen science and environmental stewardship that will create the next generation of stewards and advocates for public land. The development of Camp Brookside was supported by a three year VISTA project in addition to site restoration funding. The operations of this center will be supported directly by Friends of New River through fundraising, grant writing and direct membership campaigns.
