Promise Zone Workforce Development Coordinator

The City of Philadelphia is one of a small number of communities with a Promise Zone designation, an initiative that aims to align Federal and local priorities for fighting poverty. Today, the neighborhood you grow up in impacts your odds of graduating high school, whether you are likely to face chronic disease, and your lifelong economic opportunities. The goal of this effort is to ensure that everyone has equal access to opportunity, and that community development and human service delivery partners are coordinating their efforts to achieve optimal impact. The target area of the Promise Zone locally is roughly two square miles in West Philadelphia – bounded by the Schuylkill River to the east, Girard Avenue to the north, 48th Street to the west, and Sansom Street to the south. It includes roughly 35,000 residents. Poverty rates in this area are at crisis levels at 51%, housing vacancy rates are extreme in the lowest income areas, serious crime plagues the neighborhood, and low education levels means residents struggle to compete in today’s economy. 14.45% of housing is long term vacant, and 20% of adults in seven of the eight census tracts do not have a high school degree.
