Community Liaison for DC Public Schools
The George Washington University (GWU), the sponsoring organization, is seeking Community Liaisons for DC Public Schools (DCPS) to serve as capacity builders in elementary and middle schools in Washington, D.C. With a strong record of developing reciprocal, respectful, active, and democratic partnerships, GWU works with the DCPS to place AmeriCorps VISTAs in under-resourced schools across the District. Key attributes for a successful Community Liaison for DCPS: • Desire and ability to work effectively in an urban school environment with teachers, school administrators, parents, and students • Ability to network and form relationships with community organizations • Ability to create innovative solutions to address problems faced in under-resourced schools • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and make a work plan • Adaptability, flexibility, and willingness to learn from experience • Strong written and verbal communication skills • Experience volunteering, recruiting and managing volunteers and planning programming

Member Duties : The Community Liaison for DCPS will assess needs, identify, and act on opportunities to expand and enhance partnerships for a Title I DCPS school. The AmeriCorps VISTA Member will support the school in enhancing existing afterschool, summer school, and school-day partnerships as well as help recruit and forster new partnerships and volunteer programs that enrich students both academically and socially. • Acquire training and development needed for success in the assignment • Support existing partner organizations to ensure effective programming and relationships with the school • Work with school administration and stakeholders to develop innovative solutions • Expand partnerships to meet needs and priorities of the school • Engage the school and surrounding community by participating in local events/meetings, and engaging and recruiting volunteers • Build sustainability for VISTA-initiated projects at the school • Collaborate with VISTA Cohort to share best practices
