VHCB AmeriCorps - Shelter Service Coordinator (JGHS)
 
 
 
The John W. Graham Emergency Shelter was founded in 1980 with the mission to provide temporary shelter and relief for homeless in Vermont, as well as support and resources necessary to rebuilding lives. The Shelter, which operates 24/7, also provides food, case management, access to counseling, and most importantly, respect and compassion to residents and those who utilize our food shelf. We serve families and individuals, many of whom suffer from mental illness or addiction, are disabled, or are survivors of abuse or domestic violence. Without access to the shelter, many of these individuals would be forced to remain in dangerous situations, or out on the streets. The goal of the Americorps position is to assist homeless families and individuals in locating permanent housing as well as employment and or services. Desired Qualifications: • Positive and hard-working with an understanding of the Vermont economy and the homeless demographic. • Ability to pitch in with multiple tasks as needed, and have a positive can-do attitude with residents, staff and community partners. • Confidential, non-judgmental, with excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. • Ability to think quickly and respond calmly and appropriately to crisis situations. • Knowledge of Microsoft office and database management. • Reliable transportation. Service Condition: Most of the members’ time is spent in direct service to homeless families and individuals at the Shelter or one of its housing sites. Some transportation and travel is necessary Position begins September 11th, 2017 and ends August 10th, 2018. This position is Full Time: Requires 1,700 hours and serves approximately 40 hours per week for 11 months. Member will receive a living allowance of $17,850 (pre-tax), and an education award of $5,815 (pre-tax) upon successful completion of service. Other benefits include health insurance, federal school loan forbearance, and various training opportunities.

Member Duties : • Serve homeless individuals and families. Build trust and self-esteem through positive daily contact that will support transition from homelessness to safe, affordable housing. • Model positive, clear and appropriate behavior. • Encourage clients to be active, empowered self-advocates by helping clients assess and prioritize needs, utilize case management services. • Research local service providers and resources. Connect clients with services in the larger community as well as transportation to necessary appointments and services. • Assist clients with service and employment applications. • Perform outreach and point-of-contact to clients who are homeless or near-homeless. • Communicate regularly with case managers. • Regularly assess progress of clients, making available new ideas or appropriate avenues of exploration for housing and employment contacts.
