Bread Line Inc. (in Fairbanks)

Bread Line Stone's Throw is a program to move people from poverty, or the threat of poverty, to self-sufficiency by leveraging the power of food to change peoples’ lives. The program is based on a 20-year+ model called FareStart (www.farestart.org) in Seattle, WA, and replicated through the Catalyst Kitchens Network. Over 60 such projects now exist across the US and in Scotland, at different stages of development and implementation. Some, like FareStart and DC Central Kitchen have been utilizing training in food service skills along with life and job skills (the ‘soft skills’) to change peoples’ lives for 25 years. Others, like ours, are still in the formative stage. While this can be a challenge it is also an opportunity for an individual to make a significant mark on the community. . Although each Catalyst Kitchen is different in form, each is based on a three-pronged approach to the issue: providing healthy food to community, empowering people through food service job training to change their lives,, and developing a revenue generating Enterprise to support the organization’s mission . The Bread Line Board of Directors made the decision that, while we have done a good job of serving vulnerable individuals with nutritious meals served with dignity and respect for 30 years, it was time to do more. Stone's Throw is that 'more'--it is designed to provide a means for those disadvantaged adults facing barriers to employment to move from dependence to greater self-sufficiency. Bread Line’s Stone’s Throw has formed Strategic Partnerships with referring agencies, has inaugurated an Industry Advisory Group, and has received funding to begin a job training program. The VISTA will have a crucial role in outreach, tracking, enterprise development, and future funding of this exciting new venture.
