4H Financial Literacy Programs (Fairbanks)

The overall goal of the Financial Literacy VISTA project is to build local capacity in developing, delivering and evaluating youth financial literacy and financial management skills, within the context of basic life skills as developed through the 4-H model. This will involve developing/training a volunteer and business community base, and developing local networks involving schools, businesses, and community organizations/agencies. Through this long term sustainability goal, we hope to increase financial literacy and financial management skills as well as basic life skills of youth for greater success as they transition to adulthood. As employers share with us, they can teach employees specific job-related skills. What they need are employees who come to them with basic life skills of communication, working with others, problem solving, and self-confidence; all skills developed through 4-H. ***Benefits include: Monthly living allowance ($1,222), relocation costs ($0.34/mile up to $1,000) and settling in allowance ($550) for members moving 50+ miles, health benefits, child care assistance, training, and an Education Award ($5,775) or cash stipend ($1,500). Cold weather gear allowance ($250).

Member Duties : The VISTA will become familiar with the financial literacy program, adapt the curriculum to the needs of youth in Alaska, develop a volunteer recruitment and training program, and begin talking with possible sources of volunteers, especially sources that will be sustainable over time. The VISTA will help recruit the volunteers, train them, and develop a volunteer retention and ongoing recruitment program. He or she will simultaneously need to work with community members to identify sources of youth to participate in the teen leadership component. The VISTA will work with local agencies, community groups, and stakeholders to develop a sustainable source of teen volunteers, adult volunteers, and community business partners who would be trained to deliver financial and workforce skills to youth, including low-income youth. This model, Teens Reaching Youth Team model, has been very successful across several states.
