Texas Conservation Corps - Farming Coordinator
 
 
 
This Farm Manager AmeriCorps position with the Texas Conservation Corps is an exciting opportunity to help create a new Spanish colonial-era farm unit of the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park in San Antonio. This placement with the National Park Service, for corps members, ages 21-28, is a full-time, 1700-hour (approx. one year) term of service. The position will be heavily involved with the conceptual development as well as the implementation of up to 5 acres of farmland based on traditional acequia farming techniques on the grounds of Mission San Juan. The desired outcome is that this farmland will serve as a model for cultivating up to 70 acres of farmland in south San Antonio, as well as be a dynamic, interactive and living part of the public experience at the park. A term with the Texas Conservation Corps is both a challenging and rewarding experience that you will remember for the rest of your life. Desired candidate will have previous farming experience on the community or commercial scale, a positive attitude, good organizational, writing & public speaking skills as well as a willingness to work hard.

Member Duties : AmeriCorps Member Duties: The Farm Management position with the Texas Conservation Corps will perform strenuous physical tasks outdoors in all types of weather. The position will work closely with National Park Service staff and associated SCA interns, VISTAs and other volunteers to perform essential farm duties, with some access to technical farm mentors. Cultivation of up to 5 acres of farmland is based on historic farming practices during the time of Spanish Colonialism and will take place on the grounds of San Antonio Missions National Historic Park. Farm Manager will be using hand tools, power tools, operating heavy machinery, etc. The position will also be expected to be the primary farm record-keeper and to end the term with a written business plan for farm operations. This is an AmeriCorps placement and the person in this position will be expected reside in San Antonio, within the means of the AmeriCorps living stipend, during their term of service.
