Maker Ed / Lighthouse Community Charter School VISTA
 
 
 
The Maker VISTA program places members in underserved areas to reduce poverty by inspiring low-income students through maker programs that engage them in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math), the arts and learning as a whole. The program will foster maker programming year round in 10 locations across the nation using community outreach strategies to ensure high poverty youth have access to making opportunities. The program will place 20 members into our National Maker Network structure (including 1 in Oakland at Lighthouse and 1 split between Lighthouse and Maker Ed) to act as community connectors within high poverty communities. The goal of the Maker Education Initiative (Maker Ed) is to build the capacity of youth serving organizations to engage youth in making by developing educational frameworks and disseminating resources drawn from a national network. The Maker VISTA Program will specifically increase opportunities for high poverty youth to engage in making activities that ultimately increase academic engagement in each community. Members receive support from the entire team of Maker VISTA members throughout the country. Maker VISTA will allow Lighthouse (LighthouseCreativityLab.org) to help more institutions deliver quality learning opportunities to their students by providing human capital to reach new schools, offering professional development, implementing and testing activities, documenting and disseminating their work, and secure additional funds. Lighthouse has a 4-year history of success and runs a high-functioning makerspace, accessible to students K-12. Lighthouse is working to demonstrate that all students can be innovative and creative and that schools with at-risk populations can and must provide students with access to tools and resources. The VISTA program will allow Lighthouse to increase its capacity to serve the community. Lighthouse VISTA members receive a $14,666 stipend.

Member Duties : Increase awareness and understanding about making and its potential impact on student engagement among local stakeholders; coordinate with local district administrators and schools serving high poverty communities; reach out to afterschool programs and youth-serving organizations; facilitate the start of new maker program opportunities; recruit volunteers and mentors to facilitate maker programs and coach students; promote training opportunities, meetings, and planning sessions to grow the capacity to provide activities in each hub; organize community-school partnerships; cultivate opportunities to establish dedicated makerspaces in schools and/or within communities of high poverty; and document the work being done to gain community support locally and to share best practices with the greater education field. Fluency in Spanish a plus. Applications with resume and cover letter are due by 9/19/2014.
