Virginia Service and Conservation Corps
A program of Virginia State Parks, the Virginia Service and Conservation Corps (VSCC) places in members in parks throughout the Commonwealth to serve as natural resource and disaster relief crew members. Natural Resource Crew members work on public lands in Virginia State Parks to improve and create sustainable trails and to preserve and enhance wildlife habitat through projects such as prescribed burns, invasive species control, habitat monitoring/construction, and boundary marking of parks. Members also recruit, place, and train new volunteers to help with environmental stewardship projects. When called to help with disaster relief, crew member duties vary but may include project coordination, clearing and removing debris, distributing water, and helping with search and rescue efforts. Members follow all rules of the park in which they are assigned, maintain a positive attitude, and strive to provide quality service to the community. Members will be based at one of the following state parks: Leesylvania, First Landing, Staunton River, Pocahontas, Douthat, or Hungry Mother and will complete service projects in parks throughout their region. Members receive valuable training and certifications during service, including Wildland Firefighting, First Aid/CPR, trail building, pesticide/herbicide use, chainsaw use (at the apprentice level) and ATV/UTV operation. The work is physically demanding and primarily outdoors in all weather conditions. Frequent overnight travel is required. Members must serve 900 hours between January 2017 and July 2017. A monthly living allowance of $1,251 per month is provided to members, and an Education Award of $2,887.50 is available upon successful completion of service.
