Rainbows United VISTA Fellow Volunteer Coordinator

Rainbows United, Inc. is a nonprofit organization in Wichita, Kansas, dedicated to helping children with special needs. Rainbows’ services reach approximately 4,400 children annually through programs like Quality Specialized Child Care, Targeted Case Management, Early Intervention Services, and Early Childhood Mental Health services. Rainbows improves the quality of life to south-central Kansans by serving children who may have conditions including intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, autism, Down syndrome, challenging behaviors and/or other needs. Rainbows United provides affordable and specialized child care to families with children birth to age 21 and their families with developing or at risk children from birth through kindergarten. Rainbows United is also the largest provider of Targeted Case Management services for children birth to 21 in Kansas. These case managers provide personal assistance in finding and securing programs, services, and financial aid to children and families in need. Additionally, the Early Childhood Mental Health services provided by Rainbows offers screenings and assessments, early interventions for children with social-emotional concerns, parent support and education, and classroom support for children with self-regulation concerns, challenging behaviors or developmental delays. This VISTA position addresses poverty by connecting volunteers and increasing awareness of our community need for quality childcare for children with special needs and other challenges. With quality childcare, parents are better able to maintain jobs and develop economic stability for their families. Our programs also promote school readiness for young children to make gains in social and/or emotional development so they may have a successful future which is a key determinant for children with economic disadvantages.
