Austin Partners in Education - STEM Program and Training

Austin Partners in Education (APIE) creates and fosters effective community and school partnerships to improve student college and career readiness and expand STEM education opportunities through community engagement. The VISTA project will seek to expand APIE program capacity focused on Austin ISD's under-resourced schools (including those in the Dove Springs neighborhood) to meet the tremendous need for low-income student academic and personal support from elementary through high school. Currently serving a student population that is 90% economically disadvantaged, APIE expects to support at least 3,300 students each year over the three-year course of the project. To meet the overarching objectives of the project: a) Developing and implementing a volunteer and community support strategy for targeted Austin ISD schools and b) Placing more adult volunteers in the classroom to work with high-needs students at Title I schools, the VISTA member (STEM Programs and Training Designer) will perform activities related to:* Assisting in the development of new STEM education programs and the design of volunteer and mentor trainings (on-line & in-person) that enhances the effectiveness of existing and newly developed content and is accessible to more potential volunteers. In addition, the VISTA will also assist with coordinating joint efforts with partner organizations to execute new STEM education programs and/or short-term initiatives.
