Healthy Dallas County

The project will focus on the underlying causes of poverty, by addressing the high number of uninsured individuals in Dallas County. Working jointly with the Office of the County Judge and Parkland Health & Hospital System, VISTAs will assess the community awareness of health coverage options. They will also develop outreach methods and materials to educate community partners like local businesses, religious institutions, community centers, and other organizations, on new health care options. These options include, but are not limited to, education on health care coverage choices and accessing community resources. The Office of the County Judge will manage the project with an additional location at Parkland’s Southeast Dallas Health Center. The Center has a broad service area including Dallas County’s southern cities, and the City of Dallas’ geographic area. In addition to these areas being high need, they have also been historically more difficult to penetrate and enhance awareness of the possible health services, and connect people with appropriate programs. The Affordable Care Act (“ACA) has increased access to affordable health care, but, many individuals remain unaware of those opportunities. This, combined with continued difficulties in educating certain Dallas County areas, means that more strategic and targeted outreach needs to occur. Thus, establishing education modules for highly uninsured communities is timely and important to enhance the public’s health and County’s vitality.
