Westhab is the largest provider of housing and supportive services for homeless and low income children, adults, and families in Westchester County, NY. Our Youth Services Department delivers comprehensive academic, recreational and enrichment services to over 1,500 at-risk youth in Yonkers, Mount Vernon, and the Bronx. This position is an amazing opportunity for the right person. Are you hungry to make a difference in the lives of children who may be struggling in school or at home and who need positive adult mentors in their lives? AmeriCorps Members provide literacy and enrichment activities to disadvantaged children in Yonkers, Mount Vernon or the Bronx. Members will participate in capacity-building projects, group training events, and volunteer projects with fellow AmeriCorps Members. These activities will take place at Westhab's headquarters in Yonkers, NY and at various volunteering events in the greater New York City area. Westhab’s AmeriCorps program is a 900 hour year of service that will prepare you to make your transition into the non-profit and education sectors. This internship opportunity enables you to gain essential experience at a large non-profit while learning marketable and transferable job skills. Westhab frequently hires AmeriCorps members after they’ve completed the program.

Member Duties : Members will: • Lead group and individual literacy activities with elementary and middle school youth utilizing the nationally recognized KidzLit literacy curriculum • Lesson plan academic activities; manage/lead activities for groups of children (between 3-10 children) in a bustling and busy youth center; work with fellow AmeriCorps members to accomplish tasks • Lead enrichment activities with children including: team and individual sports, learning games, arts & crafts activities, and more • Participate in trainings led by certified literacy instructors from the Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES), and from other external youth service professionals
