2017-18 Promise Zone Data & Evaluation Coordinator

The City of San Antonio has been selected as one of only three cities for a Promise Zone designation, a new federal initiative led by the White House with support from federal agencies, including the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Department of Justice and U.S. Department of Education. The Obama Administration created the Promise Zone initiative to address the challenges of areas of deep and persistent poverty. Today, the neighborhood you grow up in impacts your odds of graduating high school, whether you are likely to face chronic disease, and your lifelong economic opportunities. The goal of this effort is to ensure that everyone has equal access to opportunity, and that the place you are born does not determine your destiny. The Eastside Promise Zone (EPZ) has partnerships with the United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County, the San Antonio Housing Authority, San Antonio for Growth on the Eastside (SAGE) and SA2020. Support partners include San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD), Judson Independent School District, St. Philip’s College and private sector businesses, employers and investors. The 19 contiguous census tracts include 64,125 residents and a poverty rate of 35.03%. The area also includes some of San Antonio’s most violent sectors and lower employment rates of 88.41%, compared to the City’s rate of 94.0%. Juxtaposing EPZ poverty with employment indicate that many employed residents work less than full time and/or work in low wage jobs. On the plus side, the EPZ enjoys close proximity to downtown San Antonio, is bounded on three sides by major highways, enabling wider community access, and is adjacent to two of the region’s largest employers, Fort Sam Houston and the San Antonio Military Medical Center. Please join us as we break the cycle of poverty and revitalize the City’s Eastside.
