City of San Antonio Senior Nutrition Program

The Senior Nutrition Program provides senior adults, 60 years and older, with a nutritionally balanced noon meal in a congregate setting. The program also provides supportive services such as the following: transportation, companionship, health screenings, health & wellness counseling, nutrition education, recreational activities, competitive games, computer classes, exercise techniques, arts and crafts, and information & referrals. The program operates in 61 centers citywide. All services are free of charge, however, contributions are encouraged. In FY 2013, the program provided meals to approximately 19,000 seniors in 61 centers. The DHS Senior Nutrition Awareness and Outreach Program will help create a culture of wellness through healthy eating at the 61 centers participating in the City’s Senior Nutrition Program, and help increase the number of senior attendees and healthy meals served yearly. 2 VISTA members will work with the DHS Senior Services division and collaborate with community organizations to increase senior awareness of the importance of nutrition in improving health outcomes, with a focus on the link between diet and high blood pressure/diabetes. Activities will include developing project branding and increasing nutrition awareness and outreach efforts to senior clients and community service organizations.
