LAF Volunteer Coordinator

For over 40 years, LAF (formerly Legal Assistance Foundation) has provided free civil legal assistance to people living in poverty in metropolitan Chicago. Each year LAF’s more than 80 full-time attorneys, volunteers, and staff help resolve legal problems, including domestic violence, consumer fraud and unfair evictions. In addition to representing individuals in court and administrative hearings, we run community legal clinics, provide know-your-rights workshops, and work with community-based organizations to address emerging issues as well as persistent and chronic problems that affect low-income families. Our work impacts more than 40,000 people each year. LAF has five Practice Groups: Children & Families, Consumer, Housing, Immigrant & Workers’ Rights, and Public Benefits. Each Practice Group has a team of attorneys and paralegals providing legal representation in their respective areas of expertise. Our Volunteer Services Department (VSD) increases the agency’s capacity to serve clients and communities by engaging private attorneys and non-attorneys in LAF’s work. The VSD supports 18 separate pro bono projects as well as acting as the hub for all volunteer recruitment, training, retention and recognition efforts.
