BVCA Rural Youth Development

Blue Valley Community Action changes people's lives, embodies the spirit of hope, improves communities, and makes America a better place to live. We care about the entire community and we are dedicated to helping people help themselves and each other. Central operations for the project are located in Fairbury, NE. The VISTA assignment collects data and develops programming for an area including four schools in rural Jefferson County. A company vehicle will be available for most service required travel. A personal vehicle is strongly recommended for off service hours. The VISTA project will build capacity and support systems that focus on youth programming serving primarily low-income students promoting academic achievement, including preparation for and admission to post-secondary academic programs, and substance abuse prevention. VISTAs will streamline the volunteer recruitment and training process by authoring orientation and training materials as well as documents relevant to the supervision and assessment of community volunteers. VISTAs will develop new 40 Developmental Assets programming for BVCA's afterschool services and secure the commitment of community partners to simultaneously adopt their own 40 assets. VISTAs will establish new community partnerships and conduct a concentrated volunteer drives to develop a pool of skilled adult volunteers able to assist with afterschool programming, fundraising, and ongoing volunteer recruitment efforts. VISTAs will administer the 40 Developmental Assets survey in Jefferson County, assist in developing programming based on survey results, administer a pilot year of this programming, and participate in a public awareness campaign. VISTAs will build BVCA's capacity for youth and anti-poverty programs through resource development, fund raising events, grant proposal research, and writing.
