City of San Antonio Financial Empowerment Center VISTA

The City of San Antonio, in partnership with Family Service Association and United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County, launched the Financial Empowerment Centers in March 2013. The centers aim to increase financial awareness in the community by providing free financial counseling services to area residents. Certified counselors meet with clients one-on-one to review their credit report, develop a household budget, create a savings plan, and identify strategies to reduce debt, among other services. Counselors develop action plans with their clients to meet financial goals. The program integrates financial counseling into other municipal and social services to help clients achieve their goals. In the first year of operation, the centers served over 1,400 clients, who attended an average of three sessions each, helping to reduce total debt by $654,970 and total savings by over $126,476. The Financial Empowerment Centers are operated by the non-profit partners. The position will work closely with staff from the City of San Antonio, as well as both of the non-profit partners. The San Antonio Financial Empowerment Center is a replication grant provided by the Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund (CFE) and Bloomberg Philanthropies. San Antonio is one of the five cities selected to participate in the expansion. Other grantees include Denver, Lansing, Nashville and Philadelphia. The model builds on an innovative New York City initiative which started in 2008 and has served over 19,000 residents.
