Community Revitalization through Solar,

Solar Energy International (SEI) is a 501(c)3 non-profit educational institution with a mission to provide industry-leading technical training and expertise in renewable energy to empower people, communities and businesses worldwide. We are a leader in renewable energy education and training and have trained over 40,000 since 1991. Though we are an international training organization, we have a unique role to play in the economic development of the small western Colorado community we call home. Our community is in transition, especially since one of the three coalmines (and largest employers) recently closed. This realization led SEI to embark on a project of economic revitalization through solar. With the support of the first two AmeriCorps VISTAs, Solarize North Fork Valley was launched. Solarize seeks to create a more resilient community through solar by building renewable energy awareness in our valley and stimulating a local solar market, to create a long-term employment opportunities. VISTA #4 will collaborate with current VISTA on an expanded round of Solarize outreach and build capacity for our high school vocational training program, in addition to continued regional efforts to develop local energy to advance economic revitalization. SEI is working collaboratively with local organizations in the development of utility-scale solar, in addition to expanding its community solar program. VISTA will support these complimentary initiatives, working to ensure there is broader community access, especially for low-income residents, to cost-effective local energy. This position requires working with community partners, including the local economic development association, the local rural electric co-op, workforce offices, schools, and existing solar companies in the area. Stakeholder involvement is key for the success of this project! This position will work closely with the SEI Board of Directors, Executive Director, and current VISTA.
