Sharing the Harvest Farm Education Specialist

Since 2006, Sharing the Harvest Community Farm has grown and donated more than 207,000 pounds of fresh, healthy produce to be donated to our community neighbors in need. Serving the southcoast of Massachusetts from Fall River to Wareham, Sharing the Harvest hosts thousands of volunteers annually in an effort to increase our impact through higher education and more efficient production. While we have hosted more than 11,000 volunteers since our inception our need for growth continues rapidly as we try to meet the need for healthy, zero-cost produce in our neighborhoods. To help us meet our goals of providing fresh, local produce, we partner with the Hunger Commission of Southeastern Massachusetts, a program of the United Way of Greater New Bedford, who make almost-daily produce pickups and distribute 100% of the crops grown on the farm. Along with providing fresh produce to 11 emergency-feeding programs in two of Massachusetts’ poorest cities (New Bedford and Fall River), we also strive to improve both health and agricultural education and improve community stewardship through neighbors helping neighbors. While those three goals (hunger relief, education and volunteerism) are slightly independent, they also supplement each other fantastically. Whether they are on a field trip or visiting as an individual, we hope to impact all individuals who visit the farm. Regarding the farm specifically, in 2014 Sharing the Harvest planted about four acres of crops with the hopes of hosting more than 3,000 volunteers to make all the seeding, planting, weeding and harvesting possible. The crops we typically grow are not much different than those you’d see in the produce section of a supermarket. For example, we grow tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, summer squash, cucumbers, zucchini, winter squash, kale, potatoes, carrots, turnips, beets, onions, scallions, beans, Swiss chard and asparagus. As we move forward each season we continue to grow and expand, both in field and friends.

Member Duties : The Sharing the Harvest Farm Education Specialist AmeriCorps*VISTA would work to help us strengthen our educational capacity and education partnerships to build capacity in our weakest mission area, education. The FES would develop materials and research local opportunities to provide agriculture, healthy food and food availability education. These opportunities could include educating field trips that visit the farm, travelling to local schools for classroom education and educating community groups in our beneficiary area. Furthermore, the FES will build a database of materials, information and resources so that agricultural and food education may continue after their tenure has passed. The FES would be crucial to helping people understand why we operate the farm and why local food is important to local health, both in body and community. The FES would also work with our food security partners to help develop a community assessment of food resources available in our region.
