Community Planning and Capacity Building

This placement will work on two separate but related projects. My Community, My Vision is a collaborative effort between State of Indiana agencies and the Indiana Chapter of Future Farmers of America to inspire and engage the youth of Indiana's rural communities to help create their ideal community. To do this, the youth and their advisors will work closely with their local officials and a professional urban/community planning firm or a professional urban/community planner to develop a five-to-ten year Community Vision Plan for their community. The goals of My Community, My Vision are to: a) Empower the youth to develop a vision for their community; b) Promote comprehensive community development with a focus on affordable housing, agriculture, leadership, and entrepreneurship; c) Develop, promote and engage leadership in the youth of Indiana's rural communities; d) Encourage youth to return to their hometowns after completing higher education; e) Promote Indiana's rural communities as places to live, work, play and visit. We also propose that this VISTA member work on our Aging in Place initiative. Aging in place refers to making our living environment safe and adaptable so that everyone can remain independent and continue to thrive in their homes and community even as circumstances change. Since 2012, IHCDA has sought to operationalize this commitment with a coherent strategy intended to assist low-income seniors to connect with the services and housing they need in communities in which they choose to live, but we have not developed the appropriate systems to define what aging in place means to our constituents and customers and to effectively implement that definition through our programs and services. The VISTA member has a unique opportunity to explore the housing and service needs of elders with their cooperation to help IHCDA craft and implement a strategy to effectively serve seniors.
