2014-15-Salmon, Idaho-Gleaning Project Coordinator

This VISTA member will be recruited to work in Salmon and the surrounding rural communities to enhance and build capacity in the work that the Salmon Local Foods Group collaborative has been doing for more than 5 years; making local foods in our area available to all residents, making agriculture microenterprises a more equitable business venture, and generally educating the public about growing, buying, cooking, and preserving nutritious foods that are available from local sources. A team of 3 VISTA members will be working together in the community of Salmon, Idaho to implement programming on behalf of Salmon Local Foods Group's action plan. This particular VISTA member would be tasked with building capacity for the existing “Fruit Tree Gleaning Project” started by Salmon's FFA group in 2012. This program identifies fruit trees throughout the community which produce food that would otherwise to go waste. Student & adult volunteers are deployed to those trees to care for them throughout the year, and they later return to collect the fruit and get it distributed to area food banks, the Salmon Senior Kitchen, and other targeted needy families and individuals throughout the county. The other component to this program includes educational workshops to promote food preservation techniques utilizing these local fruits and vegetables. Unfortunately, the Fruit Tree Gleaning Program has not been as highly functioning in the last year due to limited time of FFA group leaders to coordinate this effort. This program is in need of some assistance for building capacity to ensure its survival. This VISTA would be tasked with invigorating the existing program, strengthening ties with the Salmon-area food banks, Sacajawea Community Garden, and Salmon Senior Kitchen, and ultimately expanding the reach of the gleaning project beyond just fruits to garden vegetables throughout the community that might otherwise go to waste as well.
