17-18 UCA Umpqua Watersheds Environmental Education Leader
Serving at Umpqua Watersheds in Roseburg, OR, the member will strengthen, expand, and lead our education programs such as our forest stewardship curriculum for elementary school students. The member will also assist in aquatic environmental restoration activities with our partnering organizations. Other activities include coordinating projects for our natural resources technical crew and organizing our Youth Wilderness Campout during the summer and recruiting/managing volunteers to support our educational programs. Preferred qualifications include: 1) Possessing a four-year degree science, environmental education or a related degree; 2) 2 yrs+ experience teaching science, environmental education or a related field; 3) Experience in outdoor recreation (backpacking, camping, etc.), and 4) Experience working with and/or desire to work with at-risk youth (ages 6 and up). United Communities AmeriCorps (UCA) engages members in meaningful service designed to meet critical community needs in Coos, Douglas, Jackson and Josephine counties in beautiful Southern Oregon. UCA partners with community-based organizations, government agencies and schools to address needs relating to education, healthy futures and economic opportunity. UCA members serve full-time for 11 months, totaling 1,700 hours for the term of service. Member Duties : Strengthen and expand our education programs including a forest stewardship curriculum, a wilderness education curriculum and a Science Olympiad team (75%). Collaborate with board/staff on our summer programs, coordinating field work projects for our natural resources technical crew and will lead our Youth Wilderness Campout (15%). Recruit/manage volunteers and raise funds to support our educational programs (5%). Assist in restoration projects in the Elk Creek Watershed (5%). Provide long term one-on-one mentoring through individualized socioemotional & academic support. Teach curricula and education programs in partnering schools and organizations. Refine and update curricula, educational materials, and teaching tools in forest stewardship, environmental science, and natural resources. Outreach to new schools and organizations for new partnerships. Coordinate/organize field trips to Crater Lake National Park. Procure donations and small grants to support the education programs.
