Arts Corps, Teen Artist Program Coordinator

Teen programming, supported by two Artist in Service AmeriCorp members, will primarily serve low-income youth of color ages 14-19. The goals of the teen program are to help youth develop advanced level artistic skills in spoken word/poetry, music, performing arts and dance; make classes accessible to students with the least access to arts learning opportunities; foster creative habits of mind among youth participants, and build teen leadership through teen leadership groups, service projects and performances. Member artists will help guide students through a creative journey to help them build their technical skills while developing higher-level thinking skills such as persistence and discipline; courage and risk-taking; reflection; critical thinking; and imagining possibilities. Arts Corps accomplishes these goals by providing a path for teens to move from instruction, to performance, to leadership through the provision of arts education, performance opportunities, leadership development and mentorship. After- school arts instruction in culturally-responsive art forms with strong adult teaching artist mentors is offered in school sites and community centers in Seattle and South King County. Classes run through the academic year typically meeting two hours per week for three ten-week sessions. From Arts Corps’ arts education classes, 15 youth are selected to participate in our intensive youth leadership development program. Teens receive eight weeks of advance training in organizing, anti-oppression, communications, planning and group facilitation. Youth who complete the training move into paid internships focused on hands on experience planning and managing events and facilitating art-making workshops for their peers. This position is contingent on funding.
