Kansas City Mayor's Office 3rd Grade Reading Initiative

The purpose of the VISTA volunteer assignment is to sustain and grow the established system for recruiting and training Turn the Page KC “Reading Buddies” and other community volunteers. VISTAs will match “Reading Buddies” by working with teachers and school staff to identify at-risk and struggling readers in kindergarten through third grades. VISTAs will be responsible for planning events, such as book drives, “Read and Feed” parent engagement nights, and coordinating with Turn the Page KC partners including the Kansas City Public Library System, Local Investment Commission, Mid-Continent Public Libraries, and others to provide literacy activities and events. The main focus of each VISTA, regardless of district or geographic assignment, is to connect the community to literacy resources and to promote a culture of literacy within each school community so that all students can learn to love reading and achieve reading proficiency by the time they leave third grade. Qualifications: excellent written and verbal skills; possess computer skills and information management skills; possess the ability to work independently and stay on task and also as a part of a team; must be able to travel to multiple work sites each week; must be able willing to work with other VISTA volunteers to coordinate schedules and transportation as needed; previous volunteer management experience is a plus; previous experience working in a school environment either as a volunteer or as staff is a plus; any bi-lingual applicants are encouraged to apply. Bachelor’s degree required. Corresponding job experience after post secondary experience or during. Degrees or work experience in education, non-profit leadership, public service, are strong considerations.
