University of Washington Women’s Center
The objective of the Making Connections (MC) program is to bridge the divide of underrepresented students in higher education and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields. Since 1998, Making Connections has served over 1,175 Seattle high school girls. Each year, 100 girls from urban Seattle high schools in 9th-12th grade participate in this highly successful, year-long program. Making Connections achieves its goal of opening doors for high school girls from low-income, first-generation families through mentoring and tutoring from successful professionals and college students, college preparation workshops, assistance with college applications and scholarships, and campus visits. Making Connections provides parent information sessions to help participants’ families better understand the college application process. Participants also get exposure to STEM professions and build leadership skills through hands-on workshops and site visits at STEM settings. Criteria considered when accepting girls into the program are low-income status, first generation college student, need for an enriched after-school experience, and an interest in STEM fields and attending college. The AmeriCorps STEM Enrichment Coordinator will support the Making Connections program and the UW Women's Center by improving the mentoring and tutoring components of MC, conducting outreach in local schools to recruit students into the program, engaging with participants' families to enrich the program's impact, and providing overall support to the after-school program.
