2014-15-Salmon, ID-Hunger Mitigation & Local Food Outreach
 
 
 
This VISTA member will be recruited to work in Salmon and the surrounding rural communities to enhance and build capacity in the work that the Salmon Local Foods Group collaborative has been doing for more than 5 years; making local foods in our area available to all residents, making agriculture microenterprises a more equitable business venture, and generally educating the public about growing, buying, cooking, and preserving nutritious foods that are available from local sources. A team of 3 VISTA members will be working together in the community of Salmon, Idaho to implement programming on behalf of Salmon Local Foods Group's action plan. This particular VISTA member will work closely with Salmon Local Foods Group as well as other VISTA members on a team within the community of Salmon, Idaho to implement nutrition and sustainable agriculture education & outreach, coordinate technical training(s), and host forums on behalf of Salmon Local Foods Group’s action plan. This member will tie together community partners in an effort to mitigate hunger among low-income families, work to bolster sustainable agriculture within the community, and educate about food safety and value-added processing regulations. Additionally, this VISTA member will work to strengthen ties between local foods producers and area restaurants and retail outlets. This posting will be filled by two VISTA members.

Member Duties : Work closely with Salmon Local Foods Group to implement vision & action plan items. Coordinate educational programming on sustainable agriculture and home food preservation as well as other education events/workshops as needed. Support farmers market in community outreach for market SNAP program. Strengthen ties between local producers and area restaurants and retail outlets. Organize food safety and value-added food processing training for local producers, restaurants and cottage food start-ups, etc. Recruit and coordinate volunteers to assist with Salmon Local Foods Group projects and work days as needed. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
